This brief was based on an idea from a group students in America. What they did it used cheap or ‘second hand’ picture frames to frame pieces of their local urban environment that were of interest.
Myself Kris Nielsen, Jamie Gregson & Steve Carton took on this idea and took it a stage further. After we took our ‘Urban Curator’ photos we then returned to the studio and picked a selection of photos to turn into stencils. The stencils wouldn’t be of the whole photo but of what was in the frame. After spraying the designs and then placing them in the relevant frames when then went back out a photographed the pieces in the same place and way we took them in the first place. The photos are really unique and they also caused us to capture things that no longer existed, for example the word ‘city’ sprayed on the wall no longer existed when we returned with our stencil.
We documented the whole process in a video called Lincoln Curators, click the link to view.
