In my second year of university I entered the I.S.T.D. competition. Out of the selection of briefs that were available that year I chose one that was called ‘Collection’ and was exactly that, research and explore the theme of collections.
My initial thoughts were to collect collections, but once put into practise this proved too thin in theory and consistency. I moved to something closer to home and chose a collection of my own, aka Lego. I had quite high obsession with Lego as a child, and I still do now, so this seemed the perfect theme for the project.
Using their print work and typography I developed a running style. Alot of the style came from the Lego manuals that came with each set. I selected my favorites from my collection to talk about, using selected illustrations from their manuals.
What I like about the work is how the ridged type and layout is complimented by the clean illustration that breaks up the blocks of type into interesting chunks. I’d really like to further this project as I think the work that goes into Lego manuals is not praised enough.
